Background

 

Menachem Begin was an Israel Prime Minister. He was born on Aug. 16, 1913, in Brest-Litovsk, Russia. He died on March 9th, 1992. He served as a prime minister from 1977 to 1983.The leader of the conservative Likud Party, he came to power after the party won a majority of the seats in the keenest.In 1974 Begin, the Egypt leader and President Jimmy Carter talked in the United States about how to end the Arab-Israeli conflict. During the meetings a peace treaty was made between Israel and Egypt. Begin and Sadat both earned the 1978 Nobel Peace Prize for their efforts to end the Arab-Israeli conflict. The treaty was signed in 1979. He also played an important military role in the Arab-Israeli war of 1947[1]

 

 

 

In 1979 Begin and the Egyptian president signed a Peace treaty. It was signed in Washington DC. One feature of the treaty was mutual recognition of each country by the other.  Another feature was to stop the war between Israel and Egypt. Also the withdrawal of the people of Israel and the forces.The agreement also provided for the free passage of Israeli ships through the Suez Canal. The treaty made Egypt the first Arab country to recognize Egypt. The treaty was signed 16 months after the Egyptian president visited Israel. In return from with Israel the U.S. gave Egypt aid.The Current peace of these 2 countries are at an "uneasy peace". [2] In result to this the leaders won the nobel peace prize. Even today the treaty is considered a watershed event. Once these 2 leaders shook hands it was the beginning of a new era. The signing of the treaty showed the courage between these 2 leaders. The Israel-Egypt Peace Treaty has proven its value in political issues as well.[3]
