Berlin

Page history last edited by Berlin 13 years, 6 months ago

Back in the late 1950's and early 60's East and West Berlin were basically different cities because of their different government types. East Berlin's counsel was communists and West Berlin wasn’t. 1,000 people from East Berlin left a day because they didn’t agree with the communism and in June of 1961 30,000 people fled East Berlin. And all to the summer of 1961 2.5 million people fled. On the night of 12-13 of August 1961, East Berlin built The Berlin Wall. They built the wall so their population didn’t decrees.

The Berlin Wall started off as a metal barbed wire fence with cinderblocks in some areas. But people still escaped East Berlin. Later on East Berlin made 15ft wall out of concrete and stone. In addition to the wall, they made gun towers, watch towers and mines. Between when the wall was put up and torn down, 170 people died trying to cross the wall. The Berlin Wall became the symbol for the Cold War and the division of East and West Berlin. During the 1970’s and 1980’s, relations between East and West Berlin improved slightly. And in 1989 the wall was opened and most of it was torn down. This famous event will be remembered for ever.
