History

Today in the U.S about 12 million women use the birth control pill[1]. In fact, a pill for men is also on its way.  The idea of a birth control pill was from Margaret Sanger and Katharine McCormick. Their idea was that it would solve overpopulation and poverty. But it didnt! In fact it actually increased population in the U.S and and did not solve poverty completely. The Birth Control Movement was led by Margaret Sanger. It urged limiting family size so she thought it would be a success. But because of unreliable and unconvenient birth control technologies, the movement failed. Later, in the 1950's, scientist Gregory Pincus developed the first somewhat safe birth control pill. Then in May, 1960, the U.S Food and Drug Administration [2]approved use of the pill. In 1965 it was only legal for married couples and in 1972 it became legal for all women. Today, the pill has been made safer than in the 1960's. It had started out as a very high dose pill, but now it is a fraction of that and is much safer. It still is not perfect though and has some side affects.

Can you afford to have a large family? Do you want any more children? If not, why do you have them? DO NOT KILL, DO NOT TAKE LIFE, BUT PREVENT -- Safe, Harmless information can be obtained of trained. Nurses at 46 AMBOY STREET, Near Pitkin Ave. -- Brookly

Importance

The birth control pill is very important because it is widely used in the U.S for several reasons. It not only prevents pregnancy but it also decreases acne and prevents abortions[3]. There are many issues concerning abortions but some people agree that the birth control pill helps to prevent that. Also, some teenagers take it to make their menstrual sytem and menstrual cramps lighter. Besides that, some men are starting to take the new invention of a male birth control pill. The pill has evolved since the 1960's and has drastically changed the U.S forever!

I found it really interesting that there is a male birth control being made. I thought that your wiki was really well written and explained your topic well. What was unsafe about the first birth control?

Birth Control pills cannot help if you need an abortion because that would mean the woman is already pregnant. But it does have a high rate of preventing pregnancy, which means if you are not pregnant then you cannot have an abortion. I am not sure if the pill affects the baby...I believe there are some studies about that ,though, if you really want to know. Good question!

Thats a good question! The first birth control pill had very high levels of progesterone. It caused blood clots and strokes in woman. There was also some reports of deaths when it first came out. All of the side effects have decreased since it first came out, but i am not sure what the death rate is today....hopefully not high!!

Great article! I never knew birth control prevented so many things besides pregnancy, like acne, menstrual cycles, and abortions. I also didn't know that there's going to be birth control for men. I learned a lot from this article.

I never knew there were laws about buying birth control in the beginning, that's very interesting. Also, I think it is very interesting that there may be a pill for men.
