Joe DiMaggio was considered by many the greatest baseball player in all history. Playing his whole career with the Yankees as an outfielder, he was nicknamed the Yankee Clipper and Joltin' Joe. This is because Joe was fast at running and powerful at batting, just like the Pan American Boeing 314 Clipper that's project started back in 1934, and was the biggest bomber of it's time. Joe Dimaggio was born in 1914 in Martinez, California. In San Francisco, he grew up with his two brothers. Dominic and Vincent also played in the major league. He started his career of baseball in 1932 as a shortstop for the San Fransico Seals. He was known for his 56 game hitting streak. This was Joe's ticket to fame. Joe usually never struck out. He had many fans following him, and he was seen as a role model for people from coast to coast.

In 1949, Joe set an important event in history. Joe DiMaggio signed a $100,000 contract. This was higher than any other salary of even the most well known players. It may have even caused the high payment that these athletes receive today that makes us envious. However, in the all-star game, Joe's injury on his heel made him switch with Larry Doby.Many fans were disappointed, and fearedt that famous Joltin' Joe was losing his magic touch. Some also thought that this had been the beggining of the end of his career. However, Joe did let Larry cause an important event. He was an important piece in the movement of feelings towards the blacks. Larry Doby was one of the first blacks to hit a in the world series, and he was a good player who deserved more than what he got.
