Background Information

Iosif Vissarionovich Djugashvili, known as Joseph Stalin to us, was a dictator for the Soviet Union from 1929 to 1953. He grew up a poor boy with a a father who treated him unfairly. But, he was very smart and received a scholarship to a religious seminary. When he was at this school, he became interested in Karl Marx and Marxism. He immediately joined a secret Marxist revolutionary group in 1898 when he was expelled from the religious seminary for missing a test date. In 1900, he became an active revolutionist and held a protest against working conditions. Over the next few years he held protests and strikes. He even started a secret press for those who disagreed with the Czar's actions. But, Czar Nicholas the II eventually jailed Joseph Stalin for his actions. Up until 1917, he was either jailed or in exile. But, during this time he was in jail, he was being connected to the Bolsheviks and Lenin. He was brought into the governing party with the Bolsheviks and even wrote an article with the help of Lenin. In 1914, Germany decalred war on Russia to begin World War I. There were many riots against the Czar and eventually Czar Nicholas II gave up his throne in 1917. At this point, Stalin was out of exile, and the liberals took over Russia. But, Lenin came back from exile and took power over the liberals and what was created was the new Soviet Russia. Over the next few years, Lenin was controlling the Bolshevik takeover. In 1922, Joseph Stalin was elected General Secretary. Stalin wanted more than this and started plotting for power. Lenin noticed that Stalin was plotting for power but couldn't do anything about it because he was too ill. he ended up dying in 1924. Within the next five years, Stalin was able to take over Soviet Russia.

  The Significance of Joseph Stalin

As soon  as Stalin took over the Soviet Union, everything went wrong. The first thing he did was transfer all the farms over to the government which really upset the farmers. In return, the farmers took all of the crops and animals they owned, and eliminated them. This caused a couple things. First off, without all of the food, everyone started to starve. Second, Stalin decided to kill all the farmers as punishment. Other than the farms, millions of people were killed or sent to labor camps. Also, all of the industries were turned over to the secret police. Neighbors were ordered to spy on each other and children were told to report their parents. Stalin decided to eliminate all of the old Bolshevik party members and anyone who had to do with Lenin. He thought that it would be best to kill anyone who disturbed his power.  Joseph stalin even had a quote; "Death solves all problems - no man, no problem."[1] This shows the kind of person he was. Then, in the late 1930's he started to cooperate with Hitler because Germany wanted to conquer all of Europe. This was the beginning of World War II.[2] The USSR and Germany signed a treaty saying that they wouldn't attack each other. Although this treaty was created, Germany did not keep its promise. By 1940, Germany was planning an attack on the USSR. The United States, France and the United Kingdom all warned Stalin but he ignored them. In late 1940, Germany attacked the Soviet Russia in Moscow. Stalin gave hope and courage to his army and eventually pushed his opponents out of Moscow in the winter of 1941-1942. So in 1943, Joseph Stalin, Winston Churchill, and Franklin D. Roosevelt all met up and decided they were going to take down Germany. These prominent figures were known as the "big three". By 1945, they conquered Germany and put a stop to Hitler. But unfortunately, this wasn't the last war that Joseph Stalin took place in. The next war that took place was the Cold War.[3] Stalin wanted to take over non communist countries and turn them into communist countries. But the United States wanted to stop the spread of communism. Also, Germany was split into four zones during the Cold War and eventually the Berlin wall was formed. The cold war lasted a long time and many people had different opinions on when it ended. Some believe it ended in 1989 when the Berlin wall fell, some feel that it ended in 1991 when Soviet Russia ended, and some think that it ended much earlier. On March 4, 1953, Stalin suffered from a brain hemorrhage and died. Some say that he did great things for his country but most feel otherwise.

I've studied lots of communists on project, Zhou Enlai, Ho Chi Min, and a little on Mao Zedong, but I've never studied this guy. I've heard of him but never learned about him until now. Great information and nice job!
