 Background

North Korea is a country  in Asia, located north of South Korea. The event that occurred in North Korea during the time of 1950 was the Korean War. In 1950, the Korean War got started by North Korea invading South Korea. The North Koreans were communists, therefore, the Chinese sent 780,000 soldiers to help the North Koreans in the war.[1] The Korean War was between North Korea and South Korea, that ended up involving many more countries than that. The war was originally about the separation of Korea, but as countries joined in, it became more than that. North Korea had the help of the Chinese and Russia. There goals were to spread the popularity of communism.[2] South Korea gained support from the United Nations. This was the first time that the UN played a military role in an issue, and they demanded the communists to withdraw from South Korea, and to stop fighting. As the communists kept fighting, the UN sent military aid to South Korea.[3] The United States, Australia, Belgium, Canada, Columbia, Ethiopia, France, and the United Kingdom were among countries that were sent from the UN to help South Korea in the war. The entire South Korean army consisted of about 1,110,000 soldiers, about 480,000 of them coming from the US.[4] Although the final deal was not broken until 1953, truce talks began during the summer of 1951. The war finally ended when the UN and North Korean signed a treaty agreement.

Significance

The Korean War involved many countries, including the United States. In fact, the US gave South Korea the most military support in the war. That's why it was not only a big deal for the two Koreas, but also a major part taken place by the United States. Also, it was the first big issue that the fairly newly created United Nations, which was founded only five year earlier, had to deal with.[7] The Korean War changed the world in a major way, and effected amnt, many countries. Some of the countries involved didnt even have an issu with either side. A lot of the countries invovled helped out South Korea only for the support of the United Nations. This three year war, lasting from June 25, 1950, until June 27, 1953, was a major war in history, that will never be forgotten.
