Pope Paul

Page history last edited by Pope Paul 13 years, 7 months ago

Background

Giovanni Battista Enrico Antonio Maria Montini was born on September 25, 1897 to a wealthy family in Italy. He became a protege of Pope Pius XI as well as a friend to Pope John, making him a very qualified Pope. Also he was " a liberal Italian, acceptable to both Curial traditionalists and non-Italian progressives."[1] All of these qualifications made him a favorite to succead Pope John XXIII. Once Pope John died in 1963 the Vatican had to vote a new Pope. After six votes, he gained 2/3 of the necessary votes to be elected.[2]  In his first address, Pope Paul stated that his agenda was to continue Vatican II, revise Canon law, work for peace and justices, and seek Christian unity. In 1965 he announced the formation of the Synod of Bishops. Because he believed he was supreme, he did not discuss celibacy or birth control with the council, creating poor press for him.[3] In a letter concerning the topic Pope Paul wrote, "It is not oppertune to debate publicly this topic. Our intenton is not

only to preserve this nacient law, but to strengthen their observance."[4] These actions in the position of Pope were not traditional or well liked making his reign as Pope extremely important.

Significance

This event is signmificant for various reasons. First of all, any thing to do with such a venerated figure such as the Pope it is automatically important to a myriad of people. Also, this excluding the council from certain topisc and deciding about them himslef was something that Popes in recent years had never done before which make is a monumental event. This showed us as well that even a holy figure as grand as the Pope can have power go to his head and believe himself almighty and supreme. As well as this, as I said before the Pope is a very important figure to an immense number of people, as well as many prominent leaders, and this bad example he set could make his followers think this is an expectable way to act.

He must have been very influential due to being a great leader of Catholics, and being one of the most remembered popes through history. This article provided me a better understanding, great job.
