In 1974 the antiestablishment of rock music began. Punk rock began because of the frustrations of the youth who felt abandoned by their virtuosic rock heros. The Sex Pistols were big in this time. The two most visible band members where not talented at all. The Sex Pistols had no music background and no musical talent, but they where still popular. The lead singer of their band was Johnny Rottyon but he was called John Lydon. Malcolm Mclaren was the band manager but had also ran a risque london clothing store called sex. There he was managing influential New York dolls (in the U.S.). At one point in Malcolm Mclaren's life he was thought to have taken part in stabbing his gilrfriend, Nancy Spungen to death. In the Manhattan crimial court in NYC he was commited to second degree murder.
The fifth most popular band was called "The Damned". The Damned helped further punk rock worldwide and was the first to break into the U.S. market via tour and releases. The fourth most famous band was called "The Clash". They always sounded more like pop music then rock and had a hard time thinking of new music. In some ways they were far more subversive then bands like the Sex Pistols or like The Misfits. The Clashes music was more accessible to a more mainstream audience. The third most popular band were the Misfits. They where one of the first bands to provide horror movie themed type music. Some say that if they where to release one of their albums today, they would make headlines. The Sex Pistols where the second ranked most popular band. People think that they "started it all" but The Ramones came first. The Sex Pistols only had one studio album. The number one band was The Ramones. They were pretty much the difinitive U.S. punk rock band. They were very few of the bands who stayed true to their kind of music, their style, and what they set out to do.
